How to Compare ETF Performance Correctly
Compare ETF returns, risk, drawdowns, fees, and date coverage using a consistent analytical process.
By Data Captain Research Team8 min read
Align the dataset first
Use the same effective start date, end date, currency, adjustment method, and investment amount for every ETF. Data alignment must happen before ranking results.
Compare more than return
Total return and CAGR explain growth, while volatility and maximum drawdown explain the path. Also consider benchmark, asset class, liquidity, expense ratio, and distribution policy when those fields are available.
- Total and annualized return
- Maximum drawdown
- Volatility
- Latest data date
- Coverage gaps
Present the result transparently
Show assumptions next to the ranking and let users inspect the equity curves. Avoid declaring a universal winner: the result applies only to the selected period and methodology.
